Bucs survive second-half rally by Elkins

TENNERTON - Buckhannon-Upshur took another step toward securing the top seed in the upcoming sectional tournament with a 49-39 win over Elkins on Thursday night.

With the victory, the Bucs (6-8) remained undefeated against sectional foes, defeating Hampshire earlier this season and sweeping the series against the Tigers.

B-U still has two games remaining against the fourth team in the section - Lewis County.

"Offensively, we did pretty good," Bucs coach Tristen Gray said. "Defensively, we have some things we need to focus on. We didn't box out, we got beat on the glass and (Elkins) did a good job attacking the boards."

The Bucs took control early, leading 11-3 after one quarter and 28-12 at the intermission.

The Tigers used a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 34-25 after three quarters but the hosts held a 15-14 scoring edge in the final canto to take the double-digit win.

"We came out in the second half aggressive," Gray said. "We wanted to extend our lead but Elkins came out with pressure and cut our lead quickly. We were able to adapt and the girls did a nice job finishing."

Megan Wilfong led B-U with 14 points. The junior center also pulled down 12 rebounds. Courtney Reed added 11 points and freshman Makayla Reynolds knocked down a pair of treys in finishing with 10 points.

Gray added Reed and Lauren Louk gave an outstanding effort in the absence of starting point guard Makayla Reger, who suffered a concussion-type injury last week.

Logan Dudley and Meghan Dolly each had 10 points for the Tigers (3-12).

"We had a good second half," Elkins coach Cathy Duffield said. "We just couldn't buy a bucket in the first half. We only scored three points in the first quarter and it's really had to bounce back from that."

The Tigers will return to action at 5:45 p.m. today at?Grafton, while the Bucs will visit Class AAA, No. 2 Greenbrier East at 1 p.m. Saturday.

In junior varsity action, Elkins defeated B-U, 56-38. Jontasia Sitton paced the Tigers in scoring with 24 points. Christine Zurbuch added 12 points.

Kelsey Burgess paced the Bucs with 15 points. Kayla McCartney added 13 points.
