ELKINS - Davis & Elkins has set the stage for a wide variety of musical, dance and theatrical performances scheduled for its spring arts series. Highlighting the season is a performance by the chart-topping acoustic Celtic tradition band Gaelic Storm, a showing of the West Virginia documentary "Hollow the Film," and a three-day Dance Festival.
"We are looking forward to bringing a broad array of arts to the campus this spring and invite the community to join us," said Myles Center for the Arts General Manager Beth King. "Whatever your arts passion may be - dance, film, musical theater, Celtic rock or classical music - we have many opportunities for the community to enjoy."
The Comedy Caravan returns to The Icehouse on Feb. 15 with comedian Pat Brown, whose motto is to put the fun back in funny. Her smart silliness style is wrapped in good-natured fun and topped with bouncy energy and an engaging smile. The free event begins at 10 p.m.
On Feb. 27, Appalachian Music & Dance Club presents live music with Lowland Hum at The Icehouse. The multisensory artistic collaboration combines folk music, visual art, print and smells. The free concert begins at 9 p.m.
Tony Lucca from NBC's "The Voice" performs for a Mardi Gras party at 10 p.m. March 1 in The Icehouse. Signed to Adam Levine's 222 Records, Lucca's most recent EP release is "With the Whole World Watching."
On March 7, interactive documentary filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon presents "Hollow the Film" at 7:30 p.m. in Eshleman Science Center room 400. The production tells the story of McDowell County through the eyes of its residents. It traces the county's history from boom and bust economies, and challenges and triumphs of every size. The event also offers visitors the opportunity to record their thoughts on West Virginia via a story booth.
A tropical theme highlights the evening of March 8 with a free live performance by Cover Drive at 10 p.m. in The Icehouse. With a mission of bringing the sunshine and sounds of their native Barbados to the world, the quartet has ignited the UK charts with three Top 10 hits.
The Davis & Elkins College Dance Festival, March 14-16 in Myles Center for the Arts, will include workshops, social dance events and concerts featuring performances by students, faculty, guest artists and local dance professionals.
Dog & Gun featuring Davis & Elkins College Instructor of Mathematics Nathan Sams performs a mountain music show in The Icehouse at 10 p.m. March 14. The band has been performing its traditional Appalachian music throughout north central West Virginia since 2011.
On March 21, it's everything Irish as Myles Center for the Arts presents Gaelic Storm. The six-member band with its signature acoustic production blends indie-folk and world grooves with Celtic tradition. With catalog sales of more than 1 million, the group's latest release, "The Boathouse," is their fourth to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart.
The sounds of string instruments will ring throughout campus during Augusta Spring Music Week, April 6-11. Award-winning musicians will instruct classes in old-time guitar, old-time fiddle and dulicmer.
The Division of Fine & Performing Arts spring production, "Schoolhouse Rock Live!," runs April 9-13 in Boiler House Theatre. The musical revue, based on songs from the popular TV series, follows nerve-wracked school teacher Tom who receives advice from various characters on how to win over his student body.
On April 27, the Recital Series Concert returns to Halliehurst. The free performance at 2 p.m. features internationally acclaimed flutist Nina Assimakopoulos, pianist Carol Beall and mezzo-soprano Hope Koehler, who is the featured soloist with the American Spiritual Ensemble.
The popular Deja Vu Music Festival returns on May 2 and 3 with featured performer Dustin Lynch. The up-and-coming country singer/songwriter is working with some of Music City's top writers and producers on his debut album. Additional acts will be announced.
