PINE GROVE - Keighan Chewning scored 14 points Friday to push Tygarts Valley past Valley- Wetzel, 47-36, in the third round of the West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament.
"After a slow, terrible start our defense picked it up," Bulldogs coach Tom Wamsley said. "Keighan carried us in the first half. He scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. The defensive intensity picked up in the third quarter. (Derrick) Villarico scored 11 points in the second half and (Ben) Sycafoose scored nine points in the fourth quarter. They kinda carried the load together. We shut them down defensively and finally found a rhythm offensively."
For the Bulldogs, Villarico finished the night with 13 points and Sycafoose added 12 points.
Sophomore Dennis Streets paced the Lumberjacks in scoring with nine points.
Joe Preat added eight points and Tucker Cain contributed six points.
Tygarts Valley will travel to Harman today for a boys and girls varsity double header.
The girls game is set for 6 p.m. and the boys game will follow.
Next up in the WVHIT, Tygarts Valley will face the winner of Doddrige County/East Hardy at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 15.
