Mr. Paul Clinton Simmons Sr., 79, formerly of the Teter Creek Lake community near Belington and more recently a resident of Mansfield Place Nursing Facility in Philippi, departed this life early Tuesday morning, Feb. 11, 2014, in the care facility following a period of declining health.

He was born Sept. 20, 1934, at Elkins, a son of the late Samford and Catherine Daisy Colett Simmons.

On Oct. 13, 1956, he was united in marriage to the former Juva Louise Cross, who preceded him in death Feb. 11, 2008.

He is survived by one son, Paul C. Simmons Jr. and wife, Melissa, of Belington; brothers, Lloyd Simmons of Caldwell Ohio, John Simmons of Canton, Ohio, and Jim Simmons of Baltimore, Md.; and sisters, Dorothy Etchison of Bel Air, Md., Virginia Shahan of Belington and Mary Shahan of Belington. Two grandchildren also survive, Amber and Mathew Simmons, both of Belington.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Thomas Simmons; and two sisters, Lelly Philippi and Lucille Shaw.

Mr. Simmons attended the schools of Barbour County and was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He was employed with General Motors in Dundalk, Md., where he was an assembly line foreman, from which he retired. After he retired, he and his wife and son moved back to Barbour County where they lived near Teter Creek Lake. He was instrumental in forming the Teter Creek Lake neighborhood watch program and conducted small engine repair in his garage. Paul was a former scout master and a Protestant by faith.

Friends will be received from Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, and again Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in Central Chapel Cemetery near Belington where full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 96 of Belington.
