Area teams can’t catch a break

Weather once again the cause of sporting events being postponed

Area teams can't catch a break from the rash of bad weather this season, creating a nightmare for school officials.

With the start of sectional tournament play for the girls just two weeks away, the room for re-scheduling games has shrunk, leading to cancellations.

Some games were able to be played Wednesday before the winter storm system moved in, but Thursday and Fridays action were put on the shelf.

Girls games postponed on Thursday included Bridgeport at Philip Barbour, Tygarts Valley at Pocahontas County, Moorefield at Berkeley Springs, Robert C. Byrd at Lewis County and Paw Paw at East Hardy.

The Bridgeport at Philip Barbour game has been moved to Feb, 21, while the Tygarts Valley at Pocahontas County contest won't be re-scheduled because the teams have already played twice this season, once coming in the WVHIT final round.

College games also were postponed on Thursday. Davis &?Elkins' men and women will now play at Ohio Valley on Feb. 24, while AB's games at Salem International have been re-scheduled for Feb. 25.

Wesleyan's contests against Notre Dame College on Thursday were played, with the men taking an 85-80 victory and the women falling, 59-48.

Make-up dates available at presstime today for Friday's boys games postponed included Tucker County at Pendleton County, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today, and Buckhannon-Upshur at Lewis County on Feb. 22.

The Region II swim meet, meanwhile, was still scheduled as of presstime to be held at 11 a.m. today at West Virginia Wesleyan College, along with the Davis & Elkins at Salem International, Alderson Broaddus at Ohio Valley and Wesleyan at Urbana basketball games.
