Allen R. Beer, 66, of Buckhannon, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at his home.
He was born Sept. 29, 1947, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Glen Dale Beer and Thelma Greathouse Beer Reeder. On Oct. 11, 1997, he married Mildred "Millie" McGee, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Amanda Woody and husband, Scott, of French Creek; one granddaughter, Kyrie Woody of French Creek; one grandson, Scotty Allen Woody of French Creek; three sisters, Linda Ball and husband, Gene, of Buckhannon, Jo Ann Mitchell of Caldwell, Ohio, and Nancy Higgins and husband, Richard, of Fairmont; one brother-in-law, Hugh McGee and wife, Ruthie, of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Beer was a juvenile officer of the West Virginia Supreme Court from 1975 to 1978, and then from 1979 to 2005, he was the director of social services and attendance for the Upshur County Board of Education. In 2004, he was the social services and attendance director of the year for West Virginia. Allen was a member of the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, but in recent years attended the Bethany Baptist Church in Hall. He also served on the Bethany Cemetery Board of Trustees.
Allen was a graduate of the Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1965, received his undergraduate degree in sociology and isychology from West Virginia Weslyean College in 1975, and received his graduate degree in counseling psychology from West Virginia University in 1982. He served two tours with the U.S. Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Mr. Beer was a past member of the Tennerton Lions Club, the Upshur County Family Resource Network and the Upshur County Senior Center Advisory Board. Allen was the past President of the board of directors for New Dawn Youth Center and the past president and Treasurer of the West Virginia Association of Social Services and Attendance Personnel. He was also the past superintendent of Mt. Hope UMC Sunday School.
Friends were received Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. today at the Bethany Baptist Church in Hall with the Rev. Roland M. "Bud" Brown officiating.
