Several area wrestlers headed to states

A strong contingent of area wrestlers will make the trek to Huntington after qualifying for the state tournament over the weekend in regional action.

Buckhannon-Upshur and Lewis County led the way, qualifying seven and six athletes, respectively, while Philip Barbour had five wrestlers advance.

The Bucs' Seth Cutright (40-1) will defend his state championship at 160 pounds after capturing the regional title Saturday in Martinsburg.

Other B-U regional champs included Brandon?Tenney (113), Dakota Linger (145) and Daniel Nolte (285). Joey Shreves, meanwhile, was runner-up at 120, Tyler Demastes finished third at 132, Matt Fair was runner-up at 152 and freshman Jack Garcia was fourth at 152.

In Class AA-A, Philip Barbour's Travis Pomp won the 220-pound region title at Frankfort High School. Other Colt qualifiers included David Murphy (113), Ian Nuzum (126), James Bell (160) and Andrew Daugherty (195). Bell was runner-up.

Lewis County qualifiers included Corey Thompson (106), Jonah Cruz (113), Chance Stalnaker (152), Kyle Rogers (170), Ryan Carson (195) and Mason Arbogast (220).

Stalnaker, Rogers and Carson all placed first at regionals.

The state wrestling tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday at Big Sandy Arena in Huntington.

B-UMS boys win title

ELKINS - Drew Heatherly scored 11 points Friday to help Buckhannon-Upshur defeat Belington Middle School, 53-34, in the title game of the area varsity tournament held at Elkins Middle School.

Cole Whited and Ryan Kittle paced BMS with six points each. Peyton Surface tallied 10 for the Bucs.

Elkins defeated Kasson 56 -31 to place third in the tourney. The Hornets were led by Elliot White with 15 points and George Triplett with13.

The all-tourney team members were, Austin Lanham (Tygarts Valley), Curtis Humphries (Philippi), Noah Price (Kasson), White (Elkins), Heatherly and Allen Lowery (B-UMS) and Whited and Kittle (Belington).

Warriors fall to Catholic

CHARLESTON - Freshman Vida Imani tallied 14 points to lead Class A, No. 7 Charleston Catholic past No. 6 Pocahontas County on Saturday.

Anna Whelan also reached double figures for the Irish (17-5) with 10 points.

Tristin Day was the lone player in double figures for the Warriors (13-7) with 13 points. Bobbi McNabb and Sarah Ryder added eight rebounds each.

Pocahontas County will host either East Hardy or Paw Paw at 7 p.m. Wednesday in sectional action.
