ELKINS - Security has become a major issue in our community, and the Randolph County Commission is taking steps to assure the safety of local residents, staff and visitors to the County Courthouse.
Plans are in place to upgrade security measures, including the installation of cameras and security devices in the office of the Prosecutor.
The Commission voted at its Feb. 20 meeting to accept bids for the installation of cameras and security devices in the county Prosecuting Attorney's office.
Commissioner Mike Taylor said, "This is part of our never ending upgrade to security at the Courthouse."
A bid was received from New Tech Systems in Dunbar for elevator upgrades in the amount of $6,445. Another bid was received from Allegheny Restoration (ARB) in Morgantown for upstairs renovations at the prosecutor's office in the amount of $9,821. Commissioners decided to move forward with both bids as submitted, barring approval from the building architect.
Also at the meeting, the Commission:
Voted to donate $2,000 to the Tygarts Valley Lions Club for their annual after-graduation lock-in to help fund food for the event and items for college dorm rooms that will be auctioned off to those in attendance.
Passed the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Grant Application for the fiscal year 2014/2015 for the 18th year.
Accepted the resignation of Bill Phillips from the Randolph County Building Commission. Phillips stated in his resignation letter that he felt the need to resign because his "inability to be available at this time could deter progress."
Taylor said of the resignation, "On behalf of the Commission, I would like to thank you for your years of service."
Approved the appointment of two new members and re-appointment of another member to the Randolph County Building Commission.
Alfred Lewis was appointed to a three-year term, beginning Feb. 20 and ending Dec. 31, 2016. Crystal Warner Gibson was re-appointed to a two-year term, beginning Feb. 20 and ending Dec. 31, 2015. Mark Haddix was appointed to a one-year term, beginning Feb. 20 and ending Dec. 31, 2014.
All three were sworn in at the meeting.
Approved a new hire in the County Clerk's Office for a main bookkeeper. Kitty Poling will be hired to take over for Dawn Manchego effective March 3.
Poling's starting salary will be $29,000 a year and she will be on a 90-day probation period.
"I think she will be a good person for the job," said County Clerk Brenda Wiseman.
Commission members are also considering the following:
A funding request from Karen Carper of Elkins ON TRAC for $16,000. Starting in March ON TRAC will begin looking for a full-time executive director.
A request from Lydia Johnson for continuation of funding of the Children's Advocacy Center for $15,000.
