MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - E. Gordon Gee is West Virginia University's new permanent president.

Gee had been serving as interim president since last December. The university's Board of Governors named the 70-year-old Gee to take over full time on Monday during an emergency meeting in Morgantown.

The decision follows a recommendation on Friday by a university search committee that endorsed Gee for the job permanently.

Gee succeeds Jim Clements, who left for Clemson University.

This will be Gee's second stint as WVU's president. He led the university from 1981 to 1985.

Gee also served two different stints as Ohio State's president. He retired from Ohio State in July 2013 after his critical remarks about Roman Catholics and Southeastern Conference schools were made public.
