BUCKHANNON?- The Tom Dunn Energy Leadership Academy is currently accepting applications from high school students across the state to participate in a 3-day event July 8-10. The Academy will take place on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon in conjunction with IOGA WV's annual Oil & Gas Equipment Show.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in learning more about the natural gas industry, regional career opportunities and leadership skills are encouraged to apply to participate in the 2014 class. There is no cost to participate, and all students who attend will receive certificates of completion for their efforts.
This year, the Academy is also accepting applications from teachers who would like to learn more about the industry. Accepted teachers are requested to nominate and bring up to three students, whom they will accompany for events, presentations and trips. Nominated students will need to fill out the student application, as well.
The Academy was founded by the Independent Oil and Gas Association of West Virginia in August 2012 to honor the memory of one of its pioneer members and industry leaders, Tom Dunn. He served as President of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of West Virginia (IOGAWV) in 1974.
His work in the industry earned him a slew of awards and accolades, and his devotion to the industry, education and the state of West Virginia inspired all those around him. In April 2012, Dunn unexpectedly died of cancer. To honor his legacy, The Tom Dunn Energy Leadership Academy was formed.
"We believe that there is no better way to honor the memory of our dear friend," Dennis Xander, board member of IOGAWV, said. "Tom Dunn understood the energy business in West Virginia, and the importance of training interested and skilled students in our region for the wonderful careers the industry offers - many of which are right here in the Mountain State."
"There is no cost to selected participants for tuition, lodging or meals. Space is limited and we will be selecting students who show leadership potential, strong academic background and a desire to learn more about the industry and career opportunities," said Xander.
The application deadline is April 1.
