Josephine Ann "Josie" Valencia, of Green Bank, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, following a brief illness in Mon General Hospital in Morgantown. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many.
Born on April 27, 1933, at Maple Meadow, to the late Dewey and Lakie Cook, she was also preceded in death by her brother, James "Buddy" Cook of Bartow, brother, Oather Cook of Bellevue, Neb., and brother, Glen Cook of Denmar; sister Shirley Morgan of Hillsboro; and grandson, Trenton Brewer of Green Bank.
She is survived by her sister, Patsy Jenkins of Pickaway; and brother, Lonnie Cook of Hagerstown, Md. She is also survived by her children, Kathy Kerr of Green Bank, Tom Valencia of Charleston, Karen Hamed of Christiansburg, Va., and Tony Valencia of Huttonsville. She had 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Narn" or "Narney."
Josie was a devout Christian and a member of Liberty Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed helping out neighbors and friends in many of ways. Her family was truly her prized possession on this earth, and she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Josie was very proud to say that she really was "Born a Coal Miner's Daughter" as celebrated in song by superstar Loretta Lynn. Born and raised by native West Virginians, Josie was very proud of her mountain heritage. As an Army wife, she lived in different states until returning to Pocahontas County in 1973 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She also liked yellow roses, springtime, mornings, Alan Jackson music, West Virginia University sports and cowboys.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel in Arbovale. Interment will follow in Dunmore Cemetery in Dunmore. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Wallace and Wallace Chapel in Arbovale.
