PHILIPPI - Broaddus Hospital's annual Barbour County Community Health Fair will be held from 7 to 11:30 a.m. May 3 at the Philippi City Building.
Individuals can receive free health screenings, discounted laboratory blood tests and learn about a variety of health and wellness services available in Barbour County. There is no charge for the health fair and area residents of all ages are encouraged to attend.
"At the health fair participants can learn more about their health, how to prevent disease and ideas for improving healthy lifestyle behaviors," said Broaddus Hospital CEO Jeff Powelson. "Helping Barbour County residents make healthy choices is a priority for us in 2014. We are excited to kick off the year with the community health fair."
Some of the screenings to be offered include blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), blood sugar, cholesterol, hearing, colon cancer, pulse oxygen and carotid artery.
The Broaddus Hospital laboratory will be conducting blood tests at a discounted cost from 7 until 10 a.m. The Comprehensive Profile includes complete blood count (CBC), lipid levels and comprehensive metabolic chemistry for only $35. Additional values which can be included are PSA (prostate specific antigen) for $20 and thyroid for $15. Overnight fasting is recommended, and blood test results are mailed directly to the patient.
The Broaddus Hospital Radiology Department will offer aortic and carotid artery screenings for a cost of $30 each, or both for $50. Appointments for these tests are required and may be scheduled by calling 304-457-8162.
"Individuals can save hundreds of dollars by taking advantage of these low cost blood and diagnostic tests," said Powelson.
A number of healthcare partners and community agencies will also participate. In addition to the screenings there will be exhibits and information on managing stress, advance directives, hospice services, physical activity, demonstrations and more. Social service agencies and health promotion specialists will also attend.
