May Friendship Day will be celebrated by Elkins-area Church Women United on May 2 at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church at noon.
Women from many different denominations will gather together in worship and fellowship to celebrate the theme, "Through God Our Hands Can Serve."
There is no membership fee to join this group and no requirement that you attend a certain number of meetings. Church Women United meets three or four times a year, at a different church each time. Attendees are asked to bring either sandwiches or a salad to share. The host church will provide desert and drinks.
Members begin the meetings sharing the luncheon they have all worked to provide. A brief worship service will follow with eight to 10 members taking part. The speaker for this meeting will be Belinda Toms, head of Tyrand Parish ministries.
The first collection for this day is called "The Fellowship of the Least Coin." This is a movement of prayer for peace and reconciliation in our own lives. Members also uphold in prayer others who are victims of jealousy, hatred, violence and injustice. As they offer up prayers, they set aside one "least coin" of our currency. Each year, worldwide, this collection funds programs enhancing justice, peace and reconciliation for women and families, communities and countries around the world.
The second collection helps with the operating costs for programs and projects of the local unit. They send a pledge amount to the West Virginia State Church Women United. The major local project is the coordination of 17 local churches working together to provide the luncheons following ecumenical Holy Week Services. Last year, from the donations at the luncheon, Church Women United gave $100 each to 12 different local organizations.
During 2014 the theme is "We are in God's hands and we are God's hands." Please consider joining for a joyous celebration of faith, fellowship and service.
