PARKERSBURG - Brief mixes of rain showers Friday couldn't put a damper on Elkins' track standout Jontasia Sitton.
The sophomore set a new school record for shot put with a throw of 37 feet 4 inches. The effort earned her second place at the Erickson Invitational held at Parkersburg South High School.
"I was aiming to get the record," Sitton said. "I had a feeling all day that I was going to set the record. I was so happy when it happened. I was screaming inside. My family was really happy too. They were all jumping up and down and screaming. My coaches were really proud too.
Elkins High School’s Jontasia Sitton set a school record in the shot put at the Erickson Inviational on Friday.
Erin Bartlett set the record in 2001 with a throw of 37 feet.
"I think its a big accomplishment, since I'm a sophomore," Sitton said. "The record was set 13 years ago. I'm going to try to build on it, so I can hold it for awhile."
EHS volunteer track coach Bob Miller said he was impressed with Sitton's throw. He said she's worked diligently to improve her shot put distance.
"She's progressed nicely," Miller said. "She's worked really hard in the weight room. Last year, she was throwing 33, 34 and sometimes 35 feet. Now she's up to 36 and 37 feet consistently. The hard work has really paid off."
Sitton has been competing in shot put since the sixth grade. She was a qualifier for the shot put event at the state AAA track meet last season.
"She's a competitor," Miller said. "She's not intimidated by the other girls. Right now, she's ranked No. 8 in power performances in AAA. I know she's looking to get back to the state tournament and give it another go."
Aside from being on the track team, Sitton is also member of the EHS girls basketball team and is an honor roll student.
The Tigers finished third as a team, behind Parkersburg and Parkersburg
