Mr. Dickie Guy Harris, 88, a resident of Belington, departed this life Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Talbott Personal Care Home at Belington. He had been in declining health for quite some time.
He was born Feb. 10, 1926, at Philippi, a son of the late Minor and Corda (Golden) Harris.
He was united in marriage July 5, 1952 to the former Mary Katherine Poe, who preceded him in death Jan. 18, 1971.
He is survived by one son, Dr. Jeffery Harris of Belington; one daughter, Alesia Swartz and husband, Lee, of Belington; two granddaughters, Christina Harris of Belington and Alex (Harris) Robbins and husband, Bobby, of North Carolina; and one great-granddaughter. Rylee Jo Robbins.
He was preceded in death by one infant child, Katherine Faye Harris; one grandson Sgt. R.J. Jimenez; two brothers, Harold L. and Robert E. Harris; and one sister, Virginia H. Jeffries.
Mr. Harris graduated from Belington High School with the class of 1944. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II where he was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Mr. Harris retired from the B & O Railroad after 30 years of employment as an engineer. He was a member of the Belington Church of Christ, a member of the American Legion Post 96 of Belington and 50-year member of the United Transportation Union.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6-9 p.m. today and again Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Evangelist Michael Philippi officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 96 of
