Capito to wave green flag at race
CHARLOTTE - U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., will serve as the honorary starter of the 2014 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday.
Capito is scheduled to wave the green flag at 6:19 p.m. to start the race.
"NASCAR is one of America's greatest traditions, and it is a tradition beloved by many of us West Virginian's," Capito said. "I am thrilled to be a part of the famed Coca-Cola 600, and more importantly, to be a part of the nation's largest celebration of the brave men and women who serve our country in the Armed Forces."
Asha Inc. hosting community event
ELKINS - Asha Inc. will be hosting a community awareness event at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Elkins City Park.
Several vendors will be set up, including Pampered Chef, Damsel in Defense, Tupperware, Origami Owl, Thirty One, Tastefully Simple, Bath Fitter, Mary Kay, Mountain Nirvana Sugar Works and Mary & Martha.
Activities for children include face painting, temporary tattoos and a magic show by Tricky Chaz scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
There will be a special guest appearances by Jordan Lowe, Ms. Wheelchair USA, and junior guest David McCormick.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
Asha Inc., a nonprofit organization, was founded in January to support West Virginians of all ages affected by paralysis.
Tire collection set in Buckhannon
BUCKHANNON - A free tire collection event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31 at the city of Buckhannon Transfer Station on Mudlick Road.
The event is sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection PPOD Program.
Only residents with state identifications may take part in the program. Only car and light truck tires will be accepted, and tires must be off the rims. There is a limit of 10 tires per person.
Tomblin appoints judge to 11th Circuit
CHARLESTON - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Tuesday the appointment of Robert E. Richardson as Circuit Judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit and Miki Thompson as Circuit Judge for the 30th Judicial Circuit.
Richardson will serve the 11th Judicial Circuit, which encompasses Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Joseph C. Pomponio Jr.
"Judge Pomponio's professionalism is well respected in the 11th Judicial Circuit," Tomblin said. "I believe Robert's extensive legal and professional background as well as his commitment to serving his community will serve the people of Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties well in his new role as judge."
Thompson will serve the 30th Judicial Circuit, which is made up of Mingo County. She fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Michael Thornsbury.
"Miki has a track record of working for West Virginia families during her time as a Family Court Judge for the 8th Circuit," Tomblin said. "I believe she will continue her commitment to serving the people and the families of Mingo County well in her new role as Circuit Judge."
