The 23rd annual Bowden Fishing Derby will be Saturday at the Bowden Fish Hatchery, nine miles east of Elkins.
The schedule of activities includes: 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., registration; 8-9 a.m., fishing for pre-school and kindergarten age children; 9:30-10:30 a.m., fishing for first- and second-grade children; 11 a.m. to noon, fishing for third-, fourth- and fifth-grade children; and 12:30-1:30 p.m., fishing for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade children. Catch and Release Pond fishing hours are 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
All children must be registered and must bring a completed form to the event. The event is for children ages 3-14, and they must be accompanied by an adult. Adults are not allowed to fish, but they can assist (i.e. casting at the Put and Take Ponds). There is a two-trout limit at the Put and Take Pond. Fishing is only allowed with bait; no fish are to be released. Younger children may fish in older age groups until they catch their limit, but older children are not allowed to fish in younger age groups.
At the Catch and Release Pond, users must be able to cast without assistance. Only artificial lures are to be used. Lures with multiple hooks are to be barbless. All trout caught from the Catch and Release Ponds must be released immediately in good condition.
There will be free fishing for children, prizes and a casting contest.
