Vera D. Bowers, 88, a resident of Locust Avenue, Philippi, passed away Saturday May 31, 2014, at her residence.
She was born June 8, 1925, at Replete, a daughter of the late Homer and Columbia (Shock) Bickel.
She was united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1948, to Ray Bowers, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Bill Bowers and wife, Cheryl, of Philippi; and a daughter, Barbara Bowers Wright of Philippi; and four grandchildren, Chris Bowers of Clarksburg, Wendy Moats of Philippi, Jordan Bowers of Philippi and Sydney Wright of Philippi.
Vera was preceded in death by one sister, Doris Farnsworth; and an infant daughter.
Vera graduated from Webster Springs High School in 1944 and was a graduate of Alderson- Broaddus College in 1948 with a degree in education. She then taught in the Webster and Barbour county school systems for over 30 years.
She enjoyed reading, watching old movies, collecting antique books, animals and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church, American Association of Retired Teachers, Eastern Star Chapter No. 41, Philippi Women's Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday June 3. A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.
