Registration for Summer Reading Camps has begun at the Philippi Public Library Library Director Judy Buckner Larry said. The theme of this year's Summer Reading Camp is "Fizz, Boom, Read!"
"We will explore science themes, 'grossology,' nature and more," Larry said. "On July 7, we will kick off the camp with special guest, Kevin Lyons, and his Magic by Kevin as we look at the science of illusion. We have lots of fun activities planned for each day. "
The library will offer the camp for 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 year old children. Camp participants will engage in arts and crafts projects, do some fun science experiments, hear and/or read wonderful books with science themes, receive fun prizes and receive a healthy lunch before departing for the day.
The Summer Reading Camps are designated for three weeks, Mondays through Fridays, beginning on July 7 through July 25, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. each day.
The library will partner with North Central West Virginia Community Action Association Inc. to provide a Summer Feeding Program. The library will serve lunches for children ages 1-18 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays beginning July 7, and continuing through July 25.
This federally funded program provides children with nutritious meals during the summer when school is not in session. Weather permitting, lunch will be served on the library lawn on picnic tables provided by Community Action under a tent awning provided by Stemple and Foreman Funeral Home.
"We want the children to participate in the Fizz, Boom, Read! Camp activities and Summer Feeding Program," Larry said. "Therefore, the public access computers will not be available to children until 12:30 p.m."
"We encourage visits by children and want the visits to be both memorable and enjoyable for the children" Larry said. "However, library staff members do not assume responsibility for the care of unsupervised children in the library."
Larry wants to remind parents that the library is not a babysitting service.
"We encourage parents to stay with the children, especially young children, and participate in the activities," Larry said.
