ELKINS - Many local events Friday will celebrate West Virginia Day, commemorating the 151st anniversary of the creation of our state on June 20, 1863.
Upshur County is showcasing the state's birthday with cake and activities at the West Virginia Wildlife Center in French Creek. The park offers more than 30 native animals, including black bears, mountain lions, river otters and more.
The Upshur County Republican Executive Committee and Central West Virginia Republican Women are sponsoring a celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Upshur County Courthouse, outside of the annex building. The event will feature birthday cake, cookies, coffee and soft drinks.
In nearby Tucker County, the Canaan Valley Resort State Park will celebrate with events featuring Civil War re-enactments, authentic encampment, plus battlefield demonstrations, presented by the Barbour Grays from Philippi; the First West Virginia Calvary Company C; the 140th Volunteers from Green County, Pa.; and the West Virginia Light Artillery. These volunteers bring history to life for all to see.
Encampment opens at Canaan Valley Resort State Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, while wagon rides will start in front of the Main Lodge at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Registration is at the indoor pool.
Saturday's events include encampment from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; artisans and crafters from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., field games and crafts from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., re-enactment of Civil War battles at noon and 5:30 p.m., and wagon rides at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Sunday will feature encampment from 9 a.m. to noon, field games and crafts from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and re-enactments of Civil War battles at noon.
In Pocahontas County, the Opera House will feature the High Street Jazz Band's West Virginia Day Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday at the Huntersville Schoolhouse, folks will celebrate with a community picnic at 5 p.m. and Civil War Mothers and Martyrs at 7 p.m.
In Hardy County from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the first West Virginia Calvary re-enactors will be featured at Lost River State Park.
