TENNERTON - Despite 24 batters striking out, Elkins Post 29 found a way to get past Buckhannon 6-4 in 12 innings Wednesday night in Area 5 American Legion action.
"To have that many strikeouts in a game is just mind-boggling," Post 29 manager Chris George said. "But I give our kids a lot of credit. They battled hard and found a way to win this game.
"Our bats did improve as the game went along."
Elkins trailed 4-2 entering the ninth before tying the game when Daniel Crawford walked and Al Johnson was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.
Crawford also helped Post 29 take the lead in the 12th when he singled and scored the eventual game-winning run on a base hit by Jared Kerns, who later trotted home on an error.
Post 7 starter Dalton Westfall fanned 15 Post 29 batters during his time on the hill. The Potomac State product went 8 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and walking two.
Luke Pudder took the loss in 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, fanning nine and walking three.
The combination of Tyler Scott, Silas Gibson and Isaac Riggleman took over the pitching duties for Elkins when starter Colby Gainer left early with a back injury.
Scott (2-0) got the victory, going four scoreless innings, surrendering three hits, striking out four and walking one. Gibson went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.
"Those guys did an excellent job on the mound,"?George said. "The players off the bench like Daniel Crawford and Jared Kerns also gave us a big lift."
Buckhannon took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Brandon Newcome, who later scored on a double steal.
Post 29 cut the lead in half in the fourth on Jake Wyatt's run-producing single that plated Chance Price.
An unearned run allowed the hosts to go back up by two in the sixth, and each team picked up a run in the eighth, Elkins on an RBI?single from Gibson and Post 7 on an error.
Post 29 (10-3 overall and 5-0 Area 5) will visit Clarksburg at 5:30 p.m. today.
