The Highland Park, Montrose and Parsons trailheads along the Allegheny Highlands Trail that reaches from Elkins to Hendricks will be the focal points for a summertime fun ride and Poker Run starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Produced by the Highlands Trail Foundation, this regional favorite bike outing is presented in cooperation with the Randolph and Tucker County Convention and Visitors Bureaus, and sponsored by Good Energy Foods, Joey's Bike Shop in Elkins, and Fat Tire Cycle in Buckhannon. Additional sponsors are Frank Mams, D.D.S., Ashley Griffiths, D.D.S., R. Mike Mullens and Associates in Elkins, and Carte-Hall CPAs, The Shavers Fork Coalition, The Pot-Luck Jug Band and The
Starting simultaneously from the Highland Park trailhead in Elkins and the historic Parsons Railroad Depot at 10 a.m., riders from both locations will meet at the Montrose trailhead for some socializing, refreshments, energy snacks and the awarding of $50 each to the holders of the best five card poker hands dealt along the trails from both directions.
This is a non-timed event and all participants will receive a free bottle of Starbuck's frappuccino or water, and a healthful snack from Good Energy Foods at the Montrose trailhead.
The event is free for Highlands Trail Foundation members. Nonmember entry fees will be $15 for single riders and $20 for families. Nonmembers can join the Highland Trails Foundation with a single membership for $15, or $20 for families, instead of paying the entry fee and receive membership status valid until the end of 2015.
Children under the age of 18 are welcome to join the tour but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All riders must wear bike helmets.
This annual event is the first of three traditional gatherings produced by the Highlands Trail Foundation each summer. Also scheduled is the Trail Fest Bluegrass Concert at the Montrose Civic Center on Aug. 16 and the return of the widely popular Blackwater Canyon Ride from Davis to Parsons City Park on Sept. 27, staged in conjunction with the Tucker County Leaf Peepers Festival.
