Members of the Elkins Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Star team hustle off the field during state tournament action against Harrison County. The Babe Ruth All-Star teams will host fundraisers on Saturday.
"The kids are getting anxious to go," said Steve Schumacher, coach of the 13-year-olds. "They've been working hard in practice and trying to get better everyday. We've been working on the fundamentals - hitting, fielding and pitching. The kids are excited to face competition."
Schumacher said the league depends on financial support from the community to make the trips possible.
To help raise funds for the trips, the teams are combining their efforts. Two separate car washes are scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. A car wash/bake sale will take place at Kroger in Elkins and another car wash is set for Tygarts Valley High School in Mill Creek.
"The league tries the best it can to pay for the hotel rooms and food, and we try to do an activity with them while we are out there," Schumacher said. "There are a lot of costs associated with the trip. Without the support of the community, it wouldn't be possible for the kids to make the trip."
The 13-year-olds are scheduled to play one game at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The team will then play two games on July 25. Opposing teams have not been announced as of Thursday.
The 15-year-olds are scheduled to play a team from Northern Indiana at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The squad will then play Southern Illinois at 10:30 a.m. and Ohio at 3 p.m., both on July 25.
Following pool play for both tournaments, the teams will be ranked and compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine who goes on to compete in the Babe Ruth League World Series.
