CRYSTAL SPRINGS One woman has died and another woman is listed in severe condition after a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon at the Crystal Springs exit of U.S. Route 33, police said.
The accident occurred when a 2010 Mazda 6, carrying two adults and traveling westbound on Route 33, struck a 2008 Cadillac CTS that was also carrying two adults and was stopped at the red light in the westbound lane of Route 33, police said. The impact caused the Cadillac to catch fire.
Betty Lou Ramsey, 85, of Belington, was the passenger in the Cadillac. She was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital following the crash, but died Saturday, police said.
Kristen Sherman, 22, of Elkins, was the passenger in the Mazda and was also transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital. She is currently listed in severe condition, upgraded from critical condition, police said.
Police said both drivers were transported to Davis Medical Center where they were treated and released. The names of the drivers were not released by police Monday.
Trooper D.T. Stallings of the West Virginia State Police said Monday the Mazda came down the hill and rear-ended the Cadillac.
"The accident happened at the Crystal Springs exit, right at the intersection where there are now stoplights," Stallings said. "The Cadillac was sitting at the intersection, sitting at the red light when the Mazda came down and struck it in the rear."
Stallings said the accident is still under investigation and that citations are currently pending.
