Eugene William Channell, 82, of Elkins, died Monday, July 21, 2014, in Hospice Care Inpatient Center, Elkins, following a brief illness.
He was born July 5, 1932, at Valley Head, Randolph County, a son of the late Edward Sylvester and Stacy Edna (Friel) Channell.
On Jan. 30, 1953, he married the love of his life, the former Dorothy Lee Montgomery, who preceded him in death March 10, 2011.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Channell and wife, Norma, of Kerens, Roger Channell and wife, Teresa, and Sherman Dale Channell, all of Elkins; three daughters, Regina McGraw, who made her home with Mr. Channell, Linda Hedrick and husband, Roger, of Elkins and Brenda Coffman, of Belington; one sister, Marie Huffman and husband, Leon, of Elkins; 13 grandchildren, Bryan, Amy, Stacy, Becky, R.W., Heather, Shawn, Roger, Sammie, Jeff, Matt, Nicholas and Nathan; great grandchildren, Jacobm, Kyleigh, Racer, Mattie, Amsley, Kateland, Kelsie, McKenzie, Anthony, Kyle, Alavania, Riley, Jacob, R.J., Olivia and Daniel; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arthur, Eugene, Maude, Ada, Vernie, Sandra, Pam, Randy, John, Lorinda and Danny.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Simmons and Doris Bennett; by a son-in-law, John McGraw; and by a sister-in-law, Emma Shoulders.
Mr. Channell was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the U.S. Army. He had worked 28 years as a contract mail driver, moving mail between the regional sorting center and local post offices. He had also worked as a night watchman for Allegheny Lumber Co., as a stockman for Quality Farm and Fleet and as a coal miner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today from Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St. in Philippi. The Rev. Randy Montgomery will officiate, and interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery, where military rites will be conferred.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, today.
