Joseph Lamar Coker, 71, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at his home in Buckhannon.
He was born May 30, 1943, in Upson County, Ga., a son of the late Clayton Mason and Lucinda Frances Watson Coker.
On Dec. 31, 1983, he married Barbara Sue Bennett, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Rachel Candis Coker of Los Angeles, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Heidi Elizabeth Coker of Cookstown, N.J.; one grandson, Justin Joseph Coker of Cookstown, N.J.; one granddaughter, Rebecca Susan Coker of Cookstown, N.J.; three brothers, James Franklin Coker and wife, Sharyn, of Buckhannon, Roger Lee Coker and wife, Karen, and Clayton Andrew Coker and wife, Ann, all of Thomaston, Ga.; one sister, Edna A. Coker of Thomaston, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Lamar Coker Jr.; one brother, John Melvin Coker; and one sister, Frances Lorraine Compton.
Mr. Coker served three tours in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy. Joseph was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Thomaston, Ga., and a truck driver for Clarksburg Casket Co.
Friends will be received Friday, Aug. 1, from 6-8 p.m. at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hebron Memorial Cemetery in Carrolton. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the gravesite.
