James F. Gregory, 73, a resident of Buckhannon, passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 6, 2014, at his home. He was born Aug. 2, 1941, in Upshur County, a son of the late Guy F. and Allie V. Simons Gregory.
On Dec. 26, 1962, at Huntington, he was married to Joyce G. Stump Gregory who survives. Also surviving is one son, James F. Gregory Jr. and wife, Diana, of Buckhannon; two grandchildren, Brittany Bennett and husband, Matt, and Carly Gregory; two great-grandchildren, Emberlee and Abilene Bennett; one brother, William B. Gregory and wife, Patricia, of Portsmouth, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Gene and Mary Stump, Greg and Fay Stump, Ted and Janet Stump, and Pat Hall and Loretta Stump; three godchildren, Casey Davis, Mahklay and Kage Queen; one backyard grandson, Logan Warner; and several adopted sons and wives, including Chris and Lisa Brake, Rod and Danielle Kesling, Tony and Sheila Louk, Lytle and Angela Batten, Keith and Karian Wolverton, John and Becky Knabenshue, Lynn Harsh and fiance, Neva Moss, Mike Rogers, Brian and Susan Hollen, Rex and Debbie Helmick and Steve and Debbie Warner; several nieces, nephews and two cousins, Thelma Summerfield of Elkins and Morjorie Johnson of Martinsburg and "Pap's" special couple, Travis and Kaitlyn Persinger also survive.
Also preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, James and Allie Simons; paternal grandparents, James and Mae Gregory; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Telford H. and Manoka Stump; one brother, Randell Gregory; two brothers-in-law, Robert Michael Stump and Edwin E. Hall; and a backyard granddaughter, Lacey Warner.
Jim graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School and Huntington Barber College. He was a self-employed barber for 51 years and worked with his father, Guy, at Gregory's Barber Shop in Buckhannon, which was the longest continuous family-run business in Upshur County. The business was started in 1930.
Jim was a loving husband to the love of his life, his wife, and was a hero to his son. He was a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather to his beautiful granddaughters and a friend to anyone he came in contact with both professionally in his business and also his personal life. He was a runner for many years and ran a marathon with his son Nov. 8, 1987, and was an avid Harley-Davidson rider who rode cross-country and to all points of the compass yearly with his son and brother riders. He enjoyed having all of his family and friends together in his backyard for parties.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 88 S. Kanawha St., Buckhannon. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 9, 2014, from the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Helen Oates and the Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley officiating. Interment will follow in the Heavner Cemetery at Buckhannon, where full military honors will be accorded by the Upshur County Honor Guard.
