ELKINS - The Randolph County Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to rescind posting an opening for a Vocational Agriculture teaching position at Harman School.
Officials said the post was rescinded because of the structural issues that have forced the school to be closed temporarily, officials said.
Randolph County Superintendent Terry George said officials are working to have the Vocational Agriculture program at Harman School for the second semester, once the school is reopened.
"That's temporary until we determine whether we get the secondary school back to Harman," George said. "We don't have space at the current location for them to take Vocational Agriculture. (Principal) Ms. (Tammie) Daniels was successful in rearranging their schedules so that none of the current high school students would be taking Vocational Agriculture in the first semester. We are going to work on second semester and see how we can readjust."
George noted the state had allocated $50,000 for the Vocational Agriculture program at Harman School. That funding has been placed into a separate bank account until the school is reopened and the program is back up and running, he said.
"If we can hold the class in the second semester we will still employ the teacher," George said.
The board members also voted unanimously Tuesday to abolish the Librarian/Media Specialist position at Elkins High School that was previously held by Donald Johnson.
Johnson, 33, was arrested on July 16 and charged with one felony count of solicitation of a minor. Bond for Johnson was set at $75,000 cash only by Randolph County Magistrate Ben Shepler.
Johnson was suspended without pay from his position as the librarian at EHS after he was removed from the school in May, officials said.
On Aug. 6 the board voted 3 to 2 to terminate Johnson. Board members Harvey Taylor, Lisa Wamsley and Bruce Haddix voted to suspend and terminate Johnson, while Donna Auvil and Janie Newlon voted against the recommendation, made by George.
The next meeting of the BOE will be a Special Regional Board Meeting at 6 p.m. Aug 27 at the Elkins Inn & Suites. Regular BOE meetings will be held at 5 p.m. at the Central Office on Sept. 2 and Sept. 16.
