Roger Melvin "June" Cottrell Jr., 79, a resident of Montrose, departed this life early Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, 2014, in Davis Medical Center at Elkins.
He was born Saturday, May 18, 1935, at Wymer, a son of the late Roger Melvin and Mary Ella Elza Cottrell. He was raised by Robert and Dollena Elza.
He was twice married. First, on Dec. 1, 1955, at Alpena, to the former Wilma Lee Lambert, who preceded him in death July 27, 2002. They had celebrated 46 years of marriage. Second, on Aug. 4, 2003, to the former Geraldine Smith, who preceded him in death April 7, 2010.
Surviving are two sons, Larry A. Cottrell of Elkins and Henry D. Cottrell of Montrose; two daughters, Theresa L. Cottrell of Statesboro, Ga., and Barbara A. Witek and husband, Billy, of Montrose; one half brother, Jim Cottrell; and one half-sister, Carolyn Morgan, both of Florida; six grandchildren, Christopher Gilgenest, Jennifer Workman, Jamie Witek, Melissa Tidey, Cassandra Cottrell and Monica Cottrell; 10 great-grandchildren; a special companion, Mary Biddle; a special friend, Lloyd Lambert; and two nephews and one niece.

He attended the one room Lambert school at Wymer. He was a veteran of the United States Army, joining in 1953 where he served two tours in Korea and one in Germany. He attended Forestry Aid School at Elkins and was relocated to Wayne County, where he worked as a Forest Ranger and in fire control for the Division of Natural Resources. He then returned to Randolph County and worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the engineering department for 14 years and then transferred to the Seneca Rocks Visitors Center as a maintenance foreman until his retirement in 1981. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping and went on trips to Canada, and a southern excursion through several states.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5-8 p.m. Friday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Eli D. Hostetler will officiate, and interment will follow in the Elza Cemetery on the Lambert Road on Middle Mountain where the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, H. W. Daniel's Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
