Wilbert Lee "Web" Jeffries, 88, of Buckhannon, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, in Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
He was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Frenchton, a son of the late Cecil and Iva P. Kincaid Jeffries.
He was preceded in death Dec. 5, 1996 by his wife, Helen Gertrude Johnston Jeffries, whom he married Feb. 14, 1956.
Also preceding him in death were his son, Nelson Jeffries; brother, Earl Jeffries; sister, Katherine Lily and husband, Joe; sister, Beatrice Lipscomb and husband, Charles; brothers-in-law, Blair Wolfe and Denzil Johnston and three infant siblings.
Web is survived by his daughter, Cheryl "Sheri" McGrew and husband, Michael, of Buckhannon; grandson, Tanner McGrew of Buckhannon; granddaughter, Chelsie McGrew of Weston; sister, Irene Wolfe of South Carolina; sister-in-law, Brenda Johnston Werling of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
He is best known as the owner of the retail business, The Sport Center of Buckhannon, a staple for hunting and fishing enthusiasts for more than 57 years. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a bachelor's degree in business. Web was a veteran of World War II, serving in the CB's detachment of the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, where he received the European Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed many years of free time with his friends "The Hardees' Gang." He enjoyed trading guns at gun shows and spent many happy hours on the local lakes and enjoyed many years with family, friends and loving his poodle, Mitzi. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel in Buckhannon, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, with the Rev. Billie Scott Mick officiating. Burial will follow in Upshur County Memorial Park in Tennerton. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.
