John Karl Miller Harris, son of John and Pam Miller of the Crystal Springs community near Elkins, was recently promoted to the rank of major in the United States Army Reserve (USAR).
Harris is the grandson of Maureen Miller and the late Samuel Miller, and Eula Currence and the late Jimmie Currence. Harris grew up in Elkins, where he attended Third Ward Elementary School, Elkins Middle School and was a graduate of the Elkins High School Class of 1996.
In 1997, he enlisted into the USAR. In 2000, Harris graduated from West Virginia University with a BA in history and received his commission as an officer in the USAR. After graduating from WVU, Harris attended the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Va., earning his Juris Doctorate degree in 2003. Harris is licensed to practice law in Washington, D.C.

Harris married his wife of 11 years, Peggy Lee Melkersen, of New Market, Va. on Aug. 16, 2003. They have two energetic children, Jacob, 8, and Gabrielle, 5. Harris is currently serving in the USAR Active Guard Reserve Program as a Training Officer at the USAR Command, located in Fort Bragg, N.C.
Harris has been deployed to Iraq, commanding a Basic Training Company and has served in staff positions at various levels of command. He has 17 years of total service and is planning to continue to serve his country. Upon retirement, he plans to settle back down among the beautiful mountains of West Virginia.
