INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) — A congressional oversight committee says it will investigate last summer’s explosion at West Virginia’s Bayer CropScience plant that killed two workers.
The head of the energy and commerce subcommittee on oversight and investigation said Friday that a hearing on April 23 will examine the causes of the accident, the adequacy of the response and the information provided to the first responders and employees.
One worker was killed immediately in the Aug. 28 explosion in the Methomyl Unit at the plant in Institute. Another worker suffered severe burns and died several weeks later.
Emergency responders have said Bayer gave them little information until nearly two hours after the explosion. The company waited more than two hours to formally report the accident to the federal government’s National Response Center.
