More details released about shooting
MILL CREEK — Further details have been released about an incident in which a man was arrested after allegedly shooting another individual on Aug. 10 in Randolph County.
According to the criminal complaint, William Wesley Burgess, 31, fired 11 rounds at the alleged victim, Brian Vance, at a home on 647 Beaver Creek Road on Aug. 10.
Burgess reportedly told police during an interview that the alleged victim came to the door of the residence and said, “Which one of you am I gonna shoot first?”
The complaint states that Burgess, who has been charged with wanton endangerment and malicious wounding, told officers that Vance then obtained a firearm and stepped back in the doorway. Burgess told officers that Vance raised a rifle and fired one shot over his head.
According to the complaint, Burgess said he didn’t believe Vance was attempting to shoot him and said that he had lowered the rifle, but he was unsure what Vance was doing to do so he pulled out his 10mm handgun and started shooting at him in the doorway. Burgess told officers that he shot a total of 11 rounds.
Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon told The Inter-Mountain on Aug. 11 that Vance had been flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital by Healthnet.
According to the complaint, Burgess left the scene after the shooting and was spotted by the West Virginia State Police traveling on US Route 151 toward Coalton/Pumpkintown Road. Police conducted a felony traffic stop of the vehicle. Four occupants were detained and transported to the Elkins detachment of the West Virginia State Police for questioning.
Burgess remains incarcerated in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on Monday on a $125,000 cash-only bond.
