Clothes sale to benefit Parish House

BUCKHANNON — For the second consecutive year, the Clothes Closet in Buckhannon will be hosting a special fundraising yard sale at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

All proceeds from the event, which is scheduled for July 13-14, will benefit the Upshur Cooperative Parish House, a nonprofit organization that has been helping low income families in Upshur County since 1992.

The sale will be offered in the Auxiliary Gymnasium on the campus of WVWC. The event will feature an array of new items, Clothes Closet co-manager Stella Harvey told The Inter-Mountain.

“The sale will feature basically all brand-new items,” she said. “Almost everything will still have the tags on them from when they were for sale in the stores. And we will have more than just clothing items, we will have shoes, houseware, and many other different things. You would be amazed with what we get in that’s new. But it’s mostly clothing, and a lot of it is going to be women’s clothes.”

The Clothing Closet is a thrift and consignment store located on Sedgwick Street. All of the money taken in at the store benefits the Parish House, which focuses on helping people with food insecurity and housing instability in Upshur County.

The Parish House also distributes special Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday food packages each year. In 2023, Parish House distributed backpacks along with school supplies to students in need.

“Everything we take in at the yard sale, as well as the store, goes to the Parrish House,” said Harvey. “All of the items we get are donated and we typically get a lot of good stuff. We save the new items we get throughout the year for this event. Because a lot of the time when I try to put items out in our store with tags on them, people will tear them off and try to get it for the prices of our other items. So we save the new stuff throughout the year for this sale.”

Harvey said the only difference between this year’s sale and the inaugural event in 2023, is that this year’s will be a day shorter.

“This year we have a shorter time to sell our items,” she said. “Last year we had three days to sell everything, but we couldn’t get the gym for that long this year. We did really well with the sale a year ago and I expect we will have another good turnout this time as well.”
