Log Cabin Quilt Show to begin on Thursday

Corley

ELKINS — Since 2014 the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild has filled the gymnasium at the Elkins Randolph YMCA with artistic creations during the week of the Mountain State Forest Festival.

The organization’s Log Cabin Quilt Show, which will take place for three-consecutive days during the MSFF (Oct. 3-5), has become widely popular over the years, drawing over 3,000 visitors alone in 2023. The Quilt Show will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

“We will have many beautiful quilts on display that are made by Guild members,” said Quilt Show organizer Deb Curtis. “We will also be exhibiting kids quilts that were made at Kids Camp, which is sponsored by the Elkins Sewing Center every summer. We will also have a Quilt Market and they will have some quilts that will be one sale along with other handmade items. There may also be some quilts on exhibit that may be for sale. It will indicate on the story card if it’s for sale, but they have to remain hanging until the end of the Quilt Show.”

Close to 100 quilts made by members of the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild will be on display at the event. There will also be a Raffle Quilt with most of the proceeds going to fund quilts for people on dialysis in Elkins.

“The Raffle Quilt is a king or queen size quilt and its colors are blue, gold, and white,” said Curtis. “We wanted to capture the Mountaineer colors with the quilt and some of the money raised from it is going to a good cause.”

Conway

This year’s Guest Exhibitor will be Cindy Conway, who has exhibited her quilts and taught a variety of quilting and design techniques in North Carolina, as well as locally at the Lewis County Quilt Retreat at Jackson’s Mill in Jane Lew, the West Virginia Quilt Festival in Summersville, and at the Elkins Sewing Center.

Conway was born in Elkins and after moving to Florida at a young age, moved back to Elkins in 1973 with her husband David, who she recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with. She retired from Dominion Transmission in 2014 and began experimenting with new ideas and techniques, which led to her making her “Hidden Bargello” quilts. She has recently been experimenting with fabric yo-yos and silk flowers, utilizing them as design elements in mini greeting quilts and embellishing clothing.

Larrayne Corley is a lifelong resident of Elkins and will be this year’s featured Guild Member at the Quilt Show. Corley’s sewing journey began at a young age while being part of 4-H and Girl Scouts. She credits Home Economics classes in high school for leading her down her chosen career path. After graduating from Concord College with a degree in Home Economics Education, Corley’s first job was selling Singer Sewing Machines for Cupp’s Furniture.

Corley taught at Coalton School and the Randolph County Technical Center before retiring from the Randolph County Board of Education in 2013. She took her first quilting class in 2001 and joined the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild in 2014.

Corley has taught quilting classes and attended many workshops. Her favorite fabrics are bright, colorful designs and batiks. She is active in the West Virginia Quilters, helping with their annual Quilt Festival. Several of her quilts have won ribbons at the West Virginia Quilt Festival.

The Capitol Christmas tree skirt, which was made last year by employees from the Elkins Sewing Center, will be back on display at this year’s Quilt Show.

The skirt contains 18 scenes from around the Monongahela National Forest, including such places as Dolly Sods, Bickle Knob, Douglas Falls and the Forest Service building. The scenes were photographed and downloaded to a special sewing machine that stiched the photos onto a dark green velvet fabric.

A special pottery quilt will also be on display. The quilt is a collaboration between two different artists using two different mediums, potter Bob Mays, and quilter Diana Beverage, both former residents of Randolph County.

“Bob used to live in Elkins and he designed a quilt with one of our members that has his pottery patterns on it,” said Curtis. “We will have that quilt on display and then we are going to have some of Bob’s pottery on display. That will be one exhibit.”

Admission to the Elkins Randolph YMCA is free for the Quit Show.

Some of Cindy Conway’s best work will be on display at the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild Quilt Show being held this week at the Elkins Randolph YMCA.

Cindy Conway’s work, above, has been on display at festivals across both West Virginia and North Carolina.

Starting at $3.92/week.
