Clerks report ‘great’ turnout for early voting

ELKINS — Randolph, Tucker, Barbour, Pocahontas and Upshur counties all report great turnouts and little to no issues during early voting as Election Day draws near.

Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman told The Inter-Mountain that, as of Thursday afternoon, around 4,701 people have voted early. Wiseman said that turn-out has slowed down since the first days of early voting and that she doesn’t expect today, the last day of early voting in the state, to be busy, but added that “you just never know.”

When asked if there had been any issues, Wiseman said no.

“We haven’t had any problems at all,” Wiseman said. “The E-Poll Books are working good. Everybody seems to like it better. It’s a faster check-in for people.”

In Tucker County, as of Thursday afternoon, around 1,117 people had voted through early voting.

“Being the second smallest county, I believe we’ve done very well,” Tucker County Clerk Sherry Simmons told The Inter-Mountain.

Simmons said that, despite lines, everything has been running “very smoothly” with a steady amount of voters every day. She said she expects turnout to remain steady today.

Barbour County Clerk Laurie Austin reported that people have been waiting in line almost every day to vote early, with around 1,427 people having voted as of Wednesday morning. Austin said the amount of early voters this time around is higher than it was during the May primary election, which only saw around 699.

When asked if there have been any issues, Austin said the only problem has been the lines.

“Mostly the lines, you know, waiting,” Austin told The Inter-Mountain. “They’ve had to wait. There’s only so fast that you can put people through the line to vote and if we try to accommodate more voters with more machines we have to move our location to somewhere else.”

Pocahontas County Clerk Melissa Bennett told The Inter-Mountain that, as of Wednesday morning, around 15% of their voters had voted.

“It is going well,” Bennett said. “We’ve had record turnouts.”

Upshur County also reported a high voter percentage with about 2,118, or around 20%, of voters having voted by the end of the day on Tuesday. Upshur County Clerk Carol Smith said it has been “very busy.”

“I mean, we’ve had lines, but they’ve been through, processing through,” Smith told The Inter-Mountain. “They move relatively quickly.”

Smith anticipates today to be busy.
