Elkins treasurer’s office relocated from City Hall to ‘cozy’ location

ELKINS — It’s “business as usual” for the City of Elkins Treasurer’s Office and Utility Department in their new location, officials said.

Treasurer Tracy Judy said she finds the new location at 10 11th St., Suite 3 in the West Virginia Wood Technology Center to be “cozy” and “tight” but “working well,” as the departments are in their first month in their current space outside of Elkins City Hall.

City Hall is currently closed until further notice and under renovation work after it faced a sewage overflow incident on Aug. 31, which flooded the building’s basement and first floor, including the Elkins City Police Department.

“More and more people are finding us,” Judy told The Inter-Mountain Thursday.

The current location of the departments is part of the new Wood Technology Center office space, which also houses the Randolph County Development Authority. Judy said the Center is currently working on getting signs made for the departments to make it even easier for residents to find them.

“We didn’t really have anybody for quite a while,” Judy said. “Now there will be a new sign that’s going up out here. Should be any day, and there’ll also be a sign above this area (the entrance) as well.”

Judy admitted that there were a few challenges with re-setting up the computers so the software would work and making sure the phones, which are internet-based, were connected as well, but now it’s “business as usual.”

She also added that, despite the changes from the norm, residents have been courteous.

“It’s a workable situation, which we’re getting through it,” Judy said. “The public has been very gracious about it. You know, they’re always wondering ‘When are you going to get back to City Hall?’ and that’s an unknown right now.”

Judy confirmed that the departments will be staying at 10 11th St., Suite 3 for the foreseeable future, at least until City Hall is reopened for public use.

The Treasurer’s Office and Utility Department are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can still make payments online or at the drop-off box behind City Hall which, Judy said, is checked around two to three times a day.

Any mail sent to the Treasurer and Utility Departments should still be addressed to 401 Davis Ave., Elkins, West Virginia, 26241, as the postal service will take it to the proper location.

“We worked that out with the post office,” Judy said. “They’re delivering all that mail here… they’ve been wonderful to work with.”

Judy said residents can always call if they have questions or need directions to their location to make in-person payments. The Treasurer’s Office can be reached at 304-636-1414, ext. 1722.
