Man’s body recovered from wreck in water

DAILEY – A man’s body was recovered from a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle accident Monday morning on the East Dailey Road, officials said.

Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon told The Inter-Mountain Tuesday that emergency personnel found a car upside down on its top in about eight feet of water once they arrived on the scene. The body of a man was pulled from the crash.

“When we arrived, we found the car on its top in the water,” Elbon said. “It was a male driver and we are not releasing the name of the victim until all family members have been contacted.”

Elbon said the accident occurred just past the submarine bridge on the Valley Bend side, and that the road conditions were extremely slick at the wreck location.

“The car had gone off the road and into a ravine where the water was probably eight or nine feet deep,” said Elbon. “The car wasn’t actually in the river, it was in what they call a slew, where the water runs when it is up. The road was so icy at the location that you could barely stand up, so we had to call the DOH out to put some salt down.”

Elbon said it’s always scary when officers respond to this type of accident, because there are a lot of unknowns when they arrive at the scene.

“This was a tough one,” said Elbon. “We were afraid when we got there that maybe there were some backseat passengers, possibly kids, you don’t ever know. We couldn’t tell with it being in the water. We knew there was one person in it, we just didn’t know until we pulled it out of the water if there was someone else in the car.”

The Elkins Fire Department’s dive team assisted at the scene, as did the Tygart Valley Fire Department, Beverly Fire Department, Huttonsville-Mill Creek Fire Department, and Randolph County Emergency Squad.
