Vikings best Bulldogs in season opener
PETERSBURG — Peyton Tingler struck out eight over five innings as Petersburg handed Tygarts Valley a 9-2 setback in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Tingler allowed two runs on five hits, walking four in earning the win.
Freshman Payton Metheny went the final two frames, allowing no hits and striking out five of the six batters he faced.
The Vikings struck for three runs in the first inning off Bulldog starter Jaxon Drennen, taking advantage of an error, a passed ball and dropped third strike.
Lukas Wolford added a sacrifice fly to chase home Caden Arbaugh.
Petersburg tacked on another run in the second to make it 4-1, before TV answered in the third when Kaden Moore singled home Drennen.
The Bulldogs made it 4-2 in the fourth when Ian Harris scored on an error.
The Vikings added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Rohrbaugh and Metheny drew bases-loaded walks in the fifth, and another run scored on a passed ball.
Wolford added a run-producing single in the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch.
Drennen went the first four innings in taking the loss, allowing four runs — no earned — fanning 10 and walking six.
Jacob Wamsley and Adam Woods finished in relief.
Drennen was 3 for 3 to lead Tygarts Valley at the plate.
The Bulldogs visit Clay-Battelle at 5 p.m. Friday.
The Vikings are slated to host Hampshire on the same evening.
